So when everyone buys hybrids and the gas tax revenue dries up we will be forced to pay for how far we drive. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has a suggestion for raising money to fix the nations highways: tax drivers based on how many miles they drive each year.

In a report written in response to a request from Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-North Dakota), the CBO laments about the shortfall in the federal budgets appropriation for highway maintenance and reckons its time drivers start footing the bill based on how often their foot is on the gas pedal. The driver would be charged according to the number of vehicle miles traveled (VMT) above that which he is allowed under appropriately promulgated guidelines.
The 26-page study is entitled (none to cleverly) Alternative Approaches to Funding Highways and goes into some detail regarding the new tax scheme and the benefits and challenges thereof.

About 25 percent of the nations highways, which carry about 85 percent of all road traffic, are paid for in part by the federal government.... reads the opening line of the paper. In other words, why should the federal government, already so strapped for cash, keeping paying so much for the highway while those who use them get a free ride?http://www.thenewamerican.com/index.php/usnews/congress/6847-cbo-recommends-taxing-drivers-for-miles-traveled

it was a bit embarrassing to say i was queuing for an operating system!

Cah! It is the people who asked who should be embarrassed.

I got there about 5 and about half-way around the block which was good enough to snag a shirt, keyboard and Leopard by about 6.15.

My main purpose in commenting though is to say congrats to Apple on the management of the event, especially the policing of the queue. It was good to see they dealt with pushing in because, let's face it, they get the same money whether you push or not.

What has Obama really done besides go on vacation for the last few years? How the hell has he raised any bar? Tell me what all he promised to do and then tell me exactly how many of those things he has accomplished so far.

He's done all he's had to do for pretty much his entire life - he showed up.

"Kon-nichi-wa" is sometimes used in the beginning of a public speech, not only to school kids but to adult people.

I should probably pre-order it. At least I can get Blue or Black at launch, instead of having to wait. :)

Wow this is big! I'm not sure but hasn't it been like forever since Mac had 5% marketshare? Over 5% must put them in the top 5 pc makers? Maybe top 3? This is already huge growth, if they get to 10% or more look out!
The jerks who make viruses for windows will take the time to make them for Mac which would suck:mad:
Great time for us Mac owners:D

    From Macworld, Oct. 19th 2006..

According to IDCs report, the growth puts Apples market share at 5.8 percent (fourth place overall), ahead of Toshiba at 4.2 percent. Dell topped the U.S. market with 31 percent, but suffered a negative growth rate of -6.7 percent. The top 5 is rounded out by HP with a 22 percent share and Gateway with a 6 percent share.

There is no application for iPhone in the Japanese trademark database.

Apple failed to use the name "Airport" in japan, so they changed to "Airmac" at last. Even if somebody took the name already, its nothing to affect the product release but only to change the name and launch.

It's highly unlikely that "unused programs" are what's slowing your system down. What's far more likely is a bad hard drive. We're not talking about Windows here--you're not likely to have a bunch of rogue processes running in the background chewing up all of your processor time.

Open up Console.app and look through the logs. If you're running 10.5 or older, check /var/log/system.log. On 10.6, check /var/log/kernel.log. Look for something like this:

    disk0s2: I/O error

That would be indicative of a failing hard drive.

I'm holding off on the ipad. I really like it and I'm not waiting for some future specs. I just am not sure I have enough need for it to spend that kind of cash. I have a three year old laptop and I think I'd rather save a little more money and get a new laptop than add an ipad to my collection. And I think the needs of an ipad are not that great for me right now.

I think if I were to buy one it would be as a gift for my parents. You know these are ideal for people in the family who do not really need a full computer but you'd like to have the ability to interact with on-line. You can set it up with your own computer and occasionally update it for them. It looks to be a lot less of a headache to manage for someone who is not tech savvy than a full computer.

Ditto on all counts, especially if the 3yo laptop is a MBP.

Why not just set Chrome's tab settings to open all links in a new tab? Or get an add-on if that setting isn't in Chrome by default?

Worst Apple ads ever. You attract more flies with sugar than vinegar, and Apple's all about the vinegar.

Actually... that's not true at all! I made a fruit fly trap last week with a small dish filled with balsamic vinegar and covered with saran wrap with little holes poked in it... I caught a whole SLEW of those buggers!!!

Frankly Apple should just commit to Thunderbolt and put those ports right on there. There is really no need for any other port. The main reason Apple sticks with the 30pin Dock Connector is size. Thin wise. Displayport is much too thick. One of the reasons they bailed on firewire on the First Gen iPod was the size. Micro USB is probably the thinnest connector out there I would imagine, but does that allow data syncing and at speeds faster than USB 2.0 ??? I don't know. The dock connector must allow for more flexibility on Apple's part I would imagine.

It's temporary just to avoid the shutdown. A government shutdown so that Tea Partiers can push their conservative social agenda wouldn't go over too well.

I don't see anything in Lion that would warrant that kind of pricing: some minor UI changes and lots of under-the-hood optimizations...sounds a whole lot like Snow Leopard.

Not at all. SL had no major new consumer-level features. Lion has Mission Control, Resume, Versions/autosave, Launchpad, fullscreen apps, Airdrop, full disk encryption, and rededesigned Mail/Address Book/iCal apps.

scem, I think in due time the price of Apple's hardware will come down. Take a look at the prices of the Macintosh/Apple product line. The Macintosh II was valued at I think over $6000. The G4/G3 motherboard was worth up to $3500 I think. Now, the Dual 1.25GHz model sells for around $3300, if you don't feel like chugging in THAT much RAM.

My guess is that in a couple of years Apple's PowerMacs will be reduced to near equivalent prices as when the first dual GHz PowerMacs came out, topping out at $3000.
